This is one of my early pieces. It took the longest to complete, because, at the time, what the piece was becoming was far ahead of my skills and understanding of my own creative process. I didn’t yet know if I was an intuitive sculptor or a planner.
I was experimenting, and for this beautiful block of marble, I made a drawing that fit the block precisely. But as I carved to the plan, I sensed that my plan wasn’t working out, and it took me a while to let go. I learned that I don’t create on paper; I create by sensing and following harmony during the carving process, not before.
I also needed to overcome the fear of cutting off too much. How does one know when enough is enough if there is no plan to follow? I left the stone until I understood its limits much better. Only then did I come back to take the extra weight off.
The piece waited for me to catch up. And I did.
